CITES DEMANDS STRONGER GLOBAL ACTION TO PROTECT AFRICA AND ASIA'S RHINOS

Marking World Rhino Day 2026, CITES Secretary-General Ivonne Higuero issued an urgent global call to action, warning that the survival of all five remaining rhinoceros species depends on persistent enforcement, international unity, and genuine community engagement.

Describing rhinos as "keystone giants of nature," Higuero emphasized that while targeted anti-poaching operations and intelligence sharing have helped stabilize key populations, international trafficking syndicates remain an active, dangerous threat across range states.

KEY PRIORITIES & GLOBAL MILESTONES HIGHLIGHTED BY CITES:

• Communities as True Custodians: Effective species protection must extend beyond ranger patrols and legal frameworks. Conservation succeeds when local communities living alongside wildlife directly share in ecotourism benefits, job creation, and land stewardship.

• Targeted Task Force Strategies: Building on outcomes from the CITES Rhinoceros Enforcement Task Force convened in 2025, range countries are receiving enhanced tools and cross-border intelligence networks to dismantle illegal horn trade syndicates.

• Upcoming Geneva Summit (November 2026): Global leaders and Parties will convene at the CITES Standing Committee meeting in Geneva this November to assess range-state progress, review enforcement data, and strengthen international trade regulations.

• Protecting Keystone Ecological Roles: Rhinos shape entire habitats—dispersing seeds, enriching soils, and maintaining open grasslands that support hundreds of other wild species.

UNITING ENFORCEMENT WITH COMMUNITY STEWARDSHIP

Saving our remaining rhinos requires an uncompromising commitment at every level—from international policy halls in Geneva to frontline ranger patrols and community conservancies in the field.
