MULTI-AGENCY "PROJECT BLOOD ORANGE" SEIZES MILLIONS IN ASSETS FROM RHINO POACHING SYNDICATE

In a major blow to international wildlife crime, South Africa’s elite Hawks unit (Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation), alongside a powerful network of state and international partners, has secured a R5.86 million ($320,000+) asset preservation order over four high-value properties linked to a sophisticated rhino horn trafficking ring.

The asset freeze comes on the heels of an 18-year prison sentence for syndicate leader Francis Kipampa, who pleaded guilty to rhino horn trafficking, money laundering, and running a organized poaching network.

Inside "Project Blood Orange"

·         The Breakthrough: Investigators raided Kipampa's residence, discovering a vehicle outfitted with a hidden compartment that led authorities to recover six smuggled rhino horns in KaBokweni.

·         16 Suspects Arrested: The multi-agency operation brought down 16 co-accused individuals—including former game rangers who leaked insider information to poachers, as well as several of their relatives used to launder funds.

·         Financial Forensics at Work: By collaborating with SANParks, the Financial Intelligence Centre, the Asset Forfeiture Unit, and international partners like the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, investigators targeted the syndicate's financial infrastructure to seize houses, vehicles, and ill-gotten gains.

·         A Heavy Price: The operation honored the ultimate sacrifice of Lt-Col Leroy Bruwer, a dedicated Hawks investigator who was tragically assassinated on his way to work in March 2020 while investigating the syndicate.

Why Stripping Assets Is the Ultimate Game-Changer

Arresting low-level poachers in the field is not enough. To truly dismantle transnational wildlife crime, law enforcement must follow the money trail and strip kingpins and corrupt insiders of the wealth they generate from slaughtering endangered species. When syndicates lose their luxury real estate, vehicles, and laundering channels, the financial incentive driving poaching collapses.
