THE DIGITAL SHIFT: WILDLIFE TRAFFICKING MOVES ONLINE

The fight against illegal wildlife trafficking just hit a dangerous new frontier. The Latin American Association of Zoos and Aquariums has launched a major regional campaign warning that this multi-billion-dollar illicit trade has rapidly shifted to digital platforms, social media, and e-commerce—making it harder than ever to detect and combat.

Ranked as the world’s fourth most profitable illicit activity, the devastating reality of this trade includes:

  • Funding Organized Crime: Generating up to $20 billion annually (including illegal logging/fishing), this trade directly funds international syndicates involved in drug, arms, and human trafficking.

  • A Deadly Journey: An estimated 9 out of 10 animals captured in the wild die during transport before ever reaching illegal markets.

  • Ecological Collapse: The illicit trade has caused devastating population declines of up to 71% in vulnerable species, with hundreds of thousands of parrot eggs stolen annually and a rising black market for jaguar fangs.

From the physical jungles to the digital web, traffickers are exploiting modern technology to trade lives for profit. True conservation requires us to disrupt these networks at every level—both on the ground and online.
