
BLACK RHINOS RETURN TO ZIMBABWE’S
MATUSADONA NATIONAL PARK AFTER 30 YEARS
In one of African conservation’s most emotional full-circle moments, 17 critically endangered black rhinos have officially returned to Matusadona National Park along the shores of Lake Kariba.
Decades ago, as commercial poaching devastated over 90% of Africa’s black rhinos, wildlife authorities in Zimbabwe took a daring, drastic step: they evacuated the surviving rhinos from Matusadona to heavily guarded safe zones across the country. Now, more than 30 years later, direct descendants of those rescued animals have been airlifted back to their ancestral home.
A LANDMARK TRIUMPH FOR SPECIES RECOVERY

Preserving the Lineage: The rhinos returning today carry the exact same genetic lineage of the wild herds that once defined the Zambezi Valley.

Intensive Protection: The newly arrived rhinos are being monitored in specialized bomas before their phased release into a secure 175-square-kilometer Intensive Protection Zone (IPZ), with each animal fitted with real-time tracking technology.

Community Pride: Supported by local chiefdoms—including Nyaminyami’s traditional leaders who held fast to the promise embroidered on the park’s logo—the local community is welcoming “their rhinos back home.”

Building a Founder Population: This release marks the beginning of a multi-year effort under Zimbabwe’s National Rhino Strategy to establish a thriving, viable metapopulation in the region.
